what is a good low maintenance apartment pet?

I would like a pet, my aparment allows everything except dogs. I am a student, but i am very responsible and have been working in the animal care area a lot. I go to a school famous for veterenary medicine, there are no shortages of animal health care here. I’m positive I will provide an optimum environment, but I would also like something low maintanence because I’m still a student? Mabey someting small?
maybe hamster, lizard, betta? what do you think?
i really would like a cat. I’ve always wanted one but my family hates cats. But I live alone now! Any students have cats, can you tell me how they do with your schedule? I have a pretty stable scheduale. Leave at eight and back at six from classes I get my homework done at school with study groups. I work nine to five on weekends. I go out probably only once or twice a week.
