The pet industry is now 7th largest retail industry in the country, beating jewelry, hardware and even toy. People are spending so much on their pets, that in fact, a 2006 survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturer’s Association showed an astounding 92% of pet owners spent the same or more on their pets during the most recent recession period. Many pet owners are even forgoing luxuries in their own lives in order to make sure their pets are living in the lap of luxury … literally.
Pets are now roommates, their homes being outfitted with many of the same amenities one would expect a parent to provide their pampered children. Premium pet foods that cost more per meal than ours, kitty and dogs now goes to day care and enjoy top-of-the-line health insurance, while 60 million Americans are not insured.
People talk about giving “unconditional” love for their pets, while their aging parents are neglected, left to rot away in nursing homes. People speaks out with fury when learned that Koreans dine on dog meal, and yet turns a blind eye to suffering of chickens and cows at farms across the country. Asians tends to look upon such reaction from the West of racism, but I think it reflects more on the sick state of mind generally affecting the Western population.
Here is an unbelievable video of a guy who couldnt afford to treat or euthanize his dog. Do we need a national Pet care health program?
It is very idealistic and unrealistic to expect that the majority of pet owners can afford today’s vet care. Example: $900 for a simple teeth cleaning and 5 extractions is common. $500 for a euthanization. etc.

why do people get animals and not have the money to take care of them with quality food, and health care, I hope they never have children.
I just don’t get it! I understand that people may hit bad times but responcible pet owners would think ahead and have some money set aside for emergencies so sick and injured cats can get the care they need.
don’t people realize it’s worse on the cat to put them through all of that.
PEOPLE PLEASE THINK ABOUT YOUR DECISION TO HAVE A CAT. SOMEONE SAID ON HERE I’VE SEEN,
BEFORE GETTING A CAT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE TIME, SPACE, AND MONEY! I think that was what the person’s criteria are. PLAN for your animals!
I love my pets. They are always up to date on their shots and tick/flea/misquito treatments. They are neutered/spayed and go for wellness exams every 6 months. I have two cats, two ferrets, and a puppy. I took my cats in today for a 6 pack of Revolution, and to get an exam and their vaccinations for this year. 250 bucks and I will need more Revolution for them in 3 months and another 6 pack for my puppy soon. I will pay for their health no matter the cost and it’s like they know it so they way over charge! I work at a vet and do inventory and those needles with meds cost the doc. about 13 bucks and they charge 46. It’s getting rediculus! When is it going to stop? It’s going to hit a point where only a small amount of pet owners will be able to care take the way they want and should. It worries me.
I live in Tacoma, WA. Yes.. USA
I’ve had llamas, but an Emu! is it your pet? I took really good care of my llamas, cept after they have been shaved for summer, their spit is non directional and powerful, just had to take a bath for a week after that, have pics of them spitting… Do you have ostritches also? Can look it up, but if you have at hand sites for Emu care like to read them. Thank you
If I live for 1000 years, I will still never understand why people sit and stare at their sick, injured and helpless pets, then wander over to YA on their computer and relay the most intricate details of their pet’s anguish, then ask if they should do something about it?
YES, People. YES. You should ALL do something about it. You should take your pet to the Vet or Animal Hospital, if you are not an animal healthcare provider yourself.
Then, you should educate yourself with books, internet articles, or other media which explains the basic requirements of having a pet, which includes proper medical care, nutrition, safety and basic daily care, including elimination.
While I certainly enjoy communicating with other pet owners, it consistently amazes me how many people do NOT take responsibility for their pet’s health, perhaps assuming that, “well as 100 years ago, cats roamed free, so they must be OK to deal with whatever injury or ailment comes along now?”. Please do the right thing.
Thanks for the nice comments! Glad to know I’m not the only one feeling this way!
By the way, I’m very supportive of pet owners asking health-focused questions here, when the Vet is closed, and if they are obviously mild issues. And though cost is certainly an issue these days, there are economical plans that a vet can assist with, as well as medical care in many of the PetSmart store locations, so ignorance and apathy is NOT the answer. I maintain that if you can’t afford proper health care or nutrition for a pet, you should not have one, you should just visit a friend who has a pet.
